Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT) Gives Back
Software Testers Participate in Jeans Day Fundraiser to Help the Homeless
Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT) recently took a brief break from its laser focus on Automated Software Testing to give its attention to another cause. Earlier this month, IDT employees were asked to donate a minimum of $5.00 to a nonprofit that helps the homeless. In exchange for their donations, employees could wear jeans to work.
IDT employees in all four locations took part in the event. Collections began on Monday, October 14, 2013, and by Friday, each office reported almost 100% involvement. All participating employees received a button stating, I’m Wearing Jeans for a Reason. IDT normally has a business casual dress code. But on the 18th almost everyone showed up to work sporting denim and a Jeans Day button. It was a sea of blue!
Our Fall River, Massachusetts employees raised funds for the Bank Street Armory Food Pantry, which helps struggling senior citizens. The Mt. Laurel, New Jersey office contributed to HomeFront in Lawrenceville, NJ, where the average homeless client is seven years old. Our other two locations joined a Northern Virginia effort spearheaded by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and gave to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Partnership to Prevent and End Homelessness.
By its very nature, homelessness is difficult to measure. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, studies suggest a range from 1.6 million – 3.5 million people, or one percent of the U.S. population, experience homelessness each year. Other sources suggest about 600,000 people are homeless. Regardless of the exact numbers, homelessness is a problem that affects every community.
IDT’s Jeans Day event not only brought employees together around a good cause but also provided an opportunity to make a difference. The company’s 90 employees donated almost $700 during this first Jeans Day. The company also contributed. Events such as these are important, as they help us broaden our perspective beyond our own To Do lists.
Giving back to the community is a company-wide goal for IDT. In the past we have donated to various nonprofits, helped local STEM programs, and run 5ks together. We also host an annual student programming contest. This was IDT’s first Jeans Day. We hope to repeat the event in the future. www.IDTus.com.
