IDT Welcomes 2019 Summer Interns

In late May, Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT) welcomed an impressive group of college students for its 2019 Summer Internship Program. IDT interns will spend 10-12 weeks with the company, gaining valuable, hands-on experience in computer programming, software testing, software development and business operations. Interns working in an engineering capacity will have broad exposure to IDT’s automated solutions.

The experience starts with a full day of orientation, during which interns meet one another and are welcomed to their respective offices. IDT employees greet them and share information on day-to-day operations and procedures. Each intern is assigned a Personnel Manager and a Mentor, both of whom will provide guidance and feedback throughout the summer. Following orientation, interns meet with their managers to learn more about specific projects and technologies.

According to Katherine Weller, IDT’s Director of Human Resources (HR), “We have been fortunate to find another very talented group of interns who will work closely with IDT employees this summer. Throughout their time here, our interns will learn more about the technologies we use and the solutions we build. I trust the experience will be valuable in preparing them for their future careers.”

IDT’s Summer Internship Program was established in 2008 and is currently managed by IDT’s HR team. Recruitment for this year’s intern class was highly competitive. The cycle started in the early fall, with potential candidates applying online or meeting IDT representatives at collegiate job fairs. This was followed by resume submissions and interviews.

This year’s internship class hails from nine colleges and universities across the country, including: Champlain College, Johns Hopkins University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rowan University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Rhode Island, University of Tennessee, University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Most of the interns are studying computer science, engineering or math. The majority of them are rising Juniors or Seniors.

In addition to gaining hands-on work experience, interns will be offered opportunities to learn more about defense contracting and career paths through IDT-hosted Brown Bag Lunches and Lunch with the CEO. They will be able to socialize and network with current employees at events like IDT Monthly Lunches. There will also be a few intern-focused social gatherings at each office like attending professional baseball games and bowling. It promises to be a great summer!
